The Thunder Helm is one of the most useful legendary items available in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Wearing this ancestral Gerudo relic grants Link absolute immunity to lightning strikes, making stormy exploration completely stress-free. However, securing this powerful headpiece requires more than simply completing the main narrative questline in the desert.
Prerequisites for Claiming the Thunder Helm
Before you can attempt to claim the helm, you must complete the main Divine Beast Vah Naboris quest. This involves defeating Master Kohga in the Yiga Clan Hideout to recover the stolen heirloom for Chief Riju. After pacifying the Divine Beast, return to Riju's throne room in Gerudo Town to inspect the helmet resting nearby.
Interacting with the artifact triggers an official side quest where Riju promises to lend you the helm if you resolve the problems of her citizens. She requires you to earn the trust of Gerudo Town by completing four specific local favors. Once all four tasks are fulfilled, return to the palace to receive the legendary headgear.
Helping Citizens: Tools of the Trade and Medicinal Molduga
The first town favor, Tools of the Trade, is given by Isha in the town marketplace. She needs 10 pieces of flint to reopen her jewelry shop. You can easily gather flint by breaking ore deposits found along cliffsides and mountain passes throughout Hyrule.
The second task, Medicinal Molduga, requires aiding Malena near the palace courtyard. Her husband is grave ill, and only a potion made from Molduga guts can save him. Head out into the southern desert sands, defeat a Molduga monster using remote bombs, and return the guts to receive a reward.
Cleaning Gerudo Town: The Mystery Polluter
To start The Mystery Polluter, speak to a young girl named Dalia who is crying near her flooded orchard plot. She explains that trash floating in the water channels is ruining her soil. Follow the water stream up to the palace walls where a woman named Calyban is lounging and eating hydromelons.
Calyban refuses to stop littering unless you bring her 10 wildberries from colder regions like the Rito Stable area. Handing over the fruit convinces her to clear the water supply and help Dalia plant a wildberry patch. This resolves the city's pollution issue and finishes the third required quest.
Rescuing a Guard: The Search for Barta
The final favor, The Search for Barta, begins by speaking with the guard captain Liana inside the barracks. She informs you that a guard named Barta went missing while investigating giant bones in the southwestern desert. Before venturing out into the harsh wasteland, purchase a hearty durian from the Gerudo market.
Travel to the far southwestern corner of the map near the Hawa Koth Shrine to locate Barta collapsing under the dragon skeleton. Give her the hearty durian to restore her strength, then tell her to report back to her captain. After speaking with Liana again, return to Riju to claim your ultimate reward.
